Virgina is for Lovers (my honeymoon)

So I’ve been told that Virginia is for lovers… well Laura and I decided to honeymoon into the western-Charlottesville region of Virginia for our honeymoon.

After staying at the downtown Atlanta Ritz-Carlton, and a night at the Charlotte Westin, we kicked it down a few notches and played it low key at Wintergreen Ski Resort in Virginia.

We decided early on that skiing would not be a smart idea… we had memories of being too sore to move from our previous ski trips.  But I will tell you we had A LOT of  fun.

We spent several days visiting wineries in the region.  We also went snow tubing (video below Coming soon in an update) and cooked many of our own meals. Shortly after arriving, it quickly turned cold… very cold.  In fact it snowed several times and we discovered that we were not use to all of this cold weather.

Instead of typing out everything we did I made a short bucket list of things we did (and, more importantly, things we did not do)

Our Itinerary

  1. Stay in Atlanta, GA & Charlotte, NC – Saturday & Sunday
  2. Sleep/lounge/watch movies/ recovered from wedding craziness – Mon & Tues
  3. Visited Monticello, Jefferson Winery and Charlottesville – Wed
  4. Went Snow Tubing, made our own diner – Thursday
  5. Visited  3 wineries, 1 Cider Works, 2 microbreweries and ate at a restaurant called Thai/Mex 2, watched Dateline – Friday
  6. Played it low, decided to leave early because of snow storm (see my previous post about it), and packed up – Saturday
  7. Traveled back to Savannah, Stayed at the historic Planters Inn, ate at the Olde Pink HouseSunday
  8. Traveled back home to Statesboro because of the snowstorm that I previously wrote aboutMonday

I love Laura and we had  a lot of fun on our honeymoon.  I can also say (with ALL honesty) that our married life has been just as fun and rewarding as our honeymoon.  It is my wish that our marriage and love for each other can be a testament for others.

Video coming soon…

Marriage Lesson #1: Roll with the Punches

Well, it’s been an amazing week!  So much has happened in the past 8 days – got hitched, honeymooned/drove across four states (twice) and avoided an epic ice storm.

Laura and I are very happy to married and living life together.  During our marriage counseling sessions we often talked about dealing with “life” … like jobs, arguments, money, whatever life throws at you, etc…

I often referred to a business term I learned while studying at Berry when we would talk about marriage.

You Got To Roll With The Punches - This is a phrase that refers to how boxers need to deal with the reality of actually of getting hit. Mike Tyson said it best of how hard it is to deal with a “hit” when he said “Everyone has a plan ’till they get hit.”

Well, Laura and I have been “rolling with the punches” for our wedding and our honeymoon.  We’re both job searching (for the right job), worked very hard to finance a wedding with little cushion, changed our wedding reception venue 48 hours before our wedding, and honeymooned thrifty (but still had lots of fun) on the down-low in Virginia.

Today we had to cut our honeymoon short because of the ice/snow storm that is hitting the entire South.  We drove 9 hours from the Virginia mountains to Savannah.

I’m confident that we will be able to deal with whatever life throws our way… We’ve already been doing it for the first week.
